What exactly are ice caves and why did they form on Biokovo?
Biokovo is a massif full of karst phenomena. For thousands of years, water has been breaking through limestone rock creating pits, sinkholes and caves. But ice caves are a special category – these are vertical or semi-inclined pits ranging from 50 to as much as 200 meters deep, where ice remains throughout the year, even in the middle of August when hellish heat reigns on the surface.
The temperature in these underground spaces never exceeds 4°C. In some caves, ice never completely disappears, creating stalactites and stalagmites of ice that look like scenes from another planet. The people of Biokovo recognized this natural gift long before Edison invented the light bulb.
Quarantine history: when ice was gold
The term "quarantine caves" comes from the times of plague epidemics that ravaged Dalmatia. During the 17th and 18th centuries, meat was invaluable, and without a way to cool it, it would spoil within a few hours. Ice caves became strategic resources – they were used to store meat for supplying soldiers, sailors in quarantine and the population during times of famine.
Interestingly, some caves were under military control. There were guards who regulated access, and theft of ice was considered a serious crime. Ice was cut into blocks and transported by donkeys to coastal towns at night – at night because during the day it would simply melt before reaching its destination.

1. Vošac Ice Cave
Located at 1380 meters above sea level, this cave is 68 meters deep and is one of the most accessible. It is located near the hiking trail leading to the peak of Sveti Jure. In winter, up to 15 meters of ice accumulates, which melts by late summer.
Practical information: The cave entrance can be reached from the parking lot at Ravna Vlaška (40 minutes of walking). Entry without a guide and equipment is not recommended.
2. Amfora Cave
It got its name from ceramic vessels found at the bottom – proof that people used it as far back as ancient times. It is 102 meters deep with a vertical entrance, which makes it accessible only to speleologists. However, the view into the abyss from the edge is breathtaking.
Practical information: It is located above the village of Gornje Igrane. Local guides from Makarska organize tours to the cave entrance.
3. Vilenjača
Legend has it that mountain fairies who guard the ice live in this cave. It is 147 meters deep and contains the largest permanent ice formation on Biokovo. Local shepherds stored cheese and milk here until the mid-20th century.
Practical information: Access is possible only with a guide from the Biokovo Nature Park. Organized tours depart from the Visitor Center in Podgora.
4. Mokra Jama (Wet Cave)
It got its name from water that drips through the rocks year-round creating ice curtains. It was used as a cold storage for meat during World War II when partisans had bases on Biokovo. It is 89 meters deep.
Practical information: The trail to the cave starts from the village of Podašpilje. Medium hiking fitness is required.
5. Snježnica near Lokva
The most accessible of all – the edge of the cave can be reached even with children. It is "only" 54 meters deep, but the wide opening allowed easy transport of ice. The entire village of Lokva used this cave as a communal ice house until the 1960s.
Practical information: The parking lot is located along the Biokovo Sky Road. From the parking lot to the cave is a 15-minute easy walk.
How to prepare for visiting ice caves

- Footwear: hiking boots with non-slip soles are mandatory. The interior of caves can be slippery even in summer.
- Clothing: the temperature inside is 0-4°C regardless of the season. Bring a warm layer even if it's hot outside.
- Lighting: a headlamp is essential if you plan to go beyond the entrance.
- Guide: you should not explore most caves without an experienced guide. Biokovo Nature Park offers organized tours priced from 150 to 300 kuna per person.
- Timing: the best period to visit is from May to October when access trails are dry.
