Abandoned Solar Observatories of the Adriatic: Astronomical Heritage

On the rugged Adriatic slopes, hidden from the view of most tourists, stand four forgotten solar observatories from the Yugoslav era. These fascinating structures, once proud symbols of socialist scientific progress, have today become cult sites for urban exploration enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking the Adriatic beyond the usual tourist routes. And the best part? Each of them is located near excellent local konobas where you can taste authentic Dalmatian cuisine.

Why Were Solar Observatories Built on the Adriatic?

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Adriatic was an ideal location for observing the Sun. The high number of sunny hours, clean air, and strategic position made this coast perfect for heliophysical research. Yugoslavia was then an ambitious country that wanted to prove its scientific might, and solar observatories were part of that plan.

Today, these structures are abandoned, but their brutalist architecture and spectacular locations attract a completely different audience. If you plan to visit any of them, be sure to book accommodation in the surrounding area, as excursions are most enjoyable when you have a base for exploration.

1. Učka Observatory: Where Sky Meets Sea

At the very top of Učka, at 1,401 meters above sea level, stands perhaps the most photogenic of all four observatories. Built in 1968, this dome with a panoramic view of Kvarner Bay is today a favorite destination for photographers hunting dramatic sunrises.

Practical Information

  • Access: From Lovran or Mošćenička Draga via mountain trail (about 3 hours of walking) or by car to Poklon mountain lodge, then 45 minutes on foot
  • Best time: May to September, avoid foggy days
  • Tip: Bring warm clothing – even in midsummer, temperatures at the summit can drop below 15°C

Where to Eat After the Hike

After descending to Lovran, be sure to visit the konobas in the old town. Konoba Stari Grad offers phenomenal šurlice with game, and main course prices range from 12 to 18 euros. For those with a sweet tooth, Lovran is famous for maruni – try the chestnut cake at any local pastry shop.

2. Hvar Observatory: Hidden Above the Lavender

Few people know that above the famous Hvar lavender fields, on a plateau above Stari Grad, lies a small solar station from 1971. This observatory was part of an international sunspot monitoring project, and today its white dome has become a kind of landmark for hikers.

Practical Information

  • Location: Above Stari Grad, accessible via hiking trail from Dol (about 90 minutes)
  • Entrance: Free, but the building is locked – the value lies in the location and the view
  • Photography tip: Come in June when the lavender blooms – the contrast of purple fields and the white dome is spectacular

Gastronomic Experience

After the hike, be sure to stop by Konoba Kokot in Vrbanj. Owner Tonći catches the fish himself, which he serves grilled, and the gregada made according to an old recipe is one of the best on the island. The price of a meal with wine is around 30 euros per person. Reservation is essential, especially in summer.

3. Biokovo Astronomical Bunker: Secret JNA Facility

This observatory differs from the others – it was part of military infrastructure and served for satellite tracking during the Cold War. Located on the northern slopes of Biokovo, above Zagvozd, it was a strictly guarded secret until 1991.

Practical Information

  • Access: From Zagvozd via gravel road (SUV required) or on foot approximately 2.5 hours
  • Warning: The building is in a dilapidated state, enter at your own risk
  • Best time: Spring or early autumn, avoid summer heat

Where to Refresh Yourself

In Zagvozd, you'll find the family restaurant Mate, known for peka under the bell. Lamb is ordered a day in advance, and a portion for two costs around 45 euros. Homemade cabbage and bread from a wood-fired oven are included in the price. The owners speak English and gladly explain the history of the area.

4. Pelješac Station: Astronomy Among the Vineyards

On the Pelješac peninsula, above Potomje, stands the smallest and most intimate of the four observatories. Built in 1974, it served for educating astronomy students from Sarajevo and Zagreb. Today it is surrounded by Dingač and Postup vineyards, giving it a completely unique character.

Practical Information

  • Location: 3 km above Potomje, marked gravel road
  • Access: Accessible by personal car, roadside parking
  • Interesting fact: Local winemakers use the building as a tool storage – sometimes you'll find the doors locked, but the view remains open

Wine and Gastronomic Experience

Pelješac is synonymous with premium wines and fresh fish. Matuško Winery offers Dingač tastings for 15 euros per person, while restaurant Kapetanova kuća in Mali Ston serves oysters straight from the sea for 12 euros per dozen. If you're staying for a few days, book an apartment in Orebić or Viganj – both places offer the perfect combination of beach, wine, and authentic Dalmatian atmosphere.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Before you set out hunting for abandoned observatories, keep the following in mind:

  • Footwear: Hiking boots are mandatory, terrains are often rocky and uneven
  • Water and food: Bring enough fluids, especially in summer – there are no shops at the locations
  • Camera: A wide-angle lens is ideal for architectural details
  • Respect: Although abandoned, these structures are part of cultural heritage – don't leave trash and don't vandalize

Schedule a Unique Trip

The Adriatic is not just beaches and sea. These forgotten observatories offer a glimpse into the past when Yugoslavia dreamed of the stars, while simultaneously providing an opportunity for unforgettable gastronomic experiences in the surrounding villages. Book accommodation in Kvarner, Hvar, the Makarska Riviera, or Pelješac and explore the Adriatic that most tourists never see – with domes gazing at the sky and konobas that feed the soul.
